How to Hang a Frameless Door

A frameless door can provide visual separation for a laundry room, closet space, basement or other interior room. Frameless doors can also offer limited protection from the elements for a storage shed or other outdoor building. Because they do not require the extensive work involved with framing a doorway, you can hang frameless doors quickly with only basic carpentry tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of the doorway with a measuring tape to ensure the door will fit. The doorway should be at least 3/4 inch taller than the door to provide clearance at the top and bottom.

    • 2

Check the doorway, including the floor beneath the doorway, with a carpenter's square. Trim the bottom of the door with a planer saw as necessary to keep the door from sticking on the floor if the doorway is not square.

    • 3

Cut a 1/2-by-1-inch section of lumber with a circular saw to fit the width of the doorway. Place the lumber section on the floor of the doorway and place a carpenter's level on top of it to ensure that it is level. If it is not, place wood shims under one side of the lumber until it is level.

    • 4

Position the door on top of the lumber section. Check to ensure that the door has about 1/4-inch clearance at the top.

    • 5

Draw a horizontal line at the vertical center of the door on the side where you will install the hinges. Center a metal hinge on this line and mark the screw holes on the door and the doorway. Measure and draw horizontal lines 6 to 8 inches from the top and bottom of the door. Center hinges on these lines and mark the screw holes.

    • 6

Drill pilot holes at each screw hole mark. The pilot holes should be slightly smaller than the screws that will attach the hinges to the door and doorway. Replace the hinges and insert the hinge screws with an electric screwdriver.

    • 7

Remove the lumber section and wood shims from beneath the door. Check to ensure that the door opens and closes smoothly.
