How to Build a Custom Kitchen Swing Door

A swinging door for a doorway leading from kitchen to dining room is a convenience that enables the homeowner to quickly serve meals without keeping a hand free to open the door. This type of door is often used in restaurants to make moving between the front to the back of the establishment easier for servers with their heavy trays. To convert an existing door into a swinging door, purchase a standard swinging hinge and apply it to the door.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any existing hinges from the door and the door frame using a Phillips-head bit on a cordless drill.

    • 2

Measure in 1 inch from the jamb along the top and bottom of the door frame and mark those spots with a pencil.

    • 3

Place the bottom section of the swinging door hinge on the floor with the pivot bar centered on the mark previously made. Screw the hinge to the floor with 2-inch wood screws and a cordless drill.

    • 4

Center a pencil mark on the top of the door 1/2-inch from the side of the door that you wish to pivot. Mark the bottom of the door in the same manner. These marks are where the swing hinge will be placed.

    • 5

Drill a 1/8-inch hole in the spot marked on the bottom of the door. Attach the plastic hole guard from the hinge kit to the door with the hole in the plastic over the hole in the door using 1-inch wood screws and a cordless drill.

    • 6

Attach the top section of the swing hinge to the mark made on the top of the door frame using 2-inch wood screws and a cordless drill. The top section of the swing hinge has a plastic catch that will house the pivot bar on the top of the door.

    • 7

Attach the second pivot bar to the top of the door at the 1/2-inch mark using 1-inch wood screws and a cordless drill.

    • 8

Hold the door at a 45-degree angle and slip the bottom pivot bar on the floor into the 1/8-inch hole on the door.

    • 9

Push the top of the door up until the top pivot bar is near the plastic housing on the top of the swing hinge. The pivot bar will slide into the housing from the side. It will take some strength and pressure to get the pivot bar in place.
