How to Install an Offset Wheel Roller for a Closet Door

Offset wheel rollers allow closet doors to bypass each other along a track attached to the top of the closet opening. The doors add usable space to a room, because they don't open into the room or block furniture positioned next to the closet while they're being used. Different manufacturers offer wheel rollers with slight variations, such as height adjustment knobs, but the installation principles are the same across all manufacturers.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the door on a sawhorse or another sturdy surface with the back of the door facing the ceiling. Remove the old roller if one is present, use wood putty to fill the screw holes, scrape of excess putty and let it cure for at least 15 minutes before sanding it smooth.

    • 2

Mark a spot on the back of the door 2½ inches in from each end of the top of the door. The roller will be centered on that spot. If the spot lines up with old screw holes, use a spot slightly to either side.

    • 3

Place a roller on one of the spots with the wheel facing the top of the door. Offset roller hardware has a right angle at the top that rests flush against the door. Mark the screw holes and set the roller aside. Drill pilot holes for the screws at the markings. Set the roller in place and screw it in.
