How to Hang a Homemade Door

Many skilled woodworkers opt to create their own doors rather than purchase them from a hardware store. Once the initial door is complete, however, some additional steps are required before you hang it. Installers must chip out door hinges and the openings for the doorknob. The process is not complex but requires creating accurate cut lines. After prepping the door with the proper holes, hanging it on the frame is identical to hanging a store-bought door.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and the length of the door opening and subtract 1/4 inch from both to accommodate a clearance for the door. Measure the homemade door to determine if it is larger than the desired measurements. If needed, trim the bottom of the door off using a circular saw if you are cutting more than 1/8 inch. Use a wood plane to remove less material.

    • 2

Insert the door into the opening and insert wood shims under it until it centers in the opening. Locate the hinges on the side of the door frame and mark the location on the door using a pencil. Draw another mark at the location of the lock hole, which is called a strike plate.

    • 3

Remove the door and turn it on the side so you can see the pencil marks. Center a hinge over each hinge mark and trace around it with a pencil. Chisel out the interior of the outline until it is the same depth as the hinge, approximately 1/4 inch.

    • 4

Place the cylinder lock mechanism over the location for the strike plate and trace around it. Insert a 1-inch hole saw bit into a drill and don safety glasses. Drill a 1-inch-deep hole in the outline.

    • 5

Position the doorknob plate over the door, ensuring it aligns with the cylinder lock hole on the side of the door. Use the paper template provided with the knob to adjust the distance from the edge of the door.

    • 6

Insert the proper size hole bit into the drill as specified by the knob manufacturer. Cut all the way through the door to create the knob opening.

    • 7

Place the door into the door opening and align the hinges with the hinge depressions. Insert screws into the hinges to attach them to the door firmly.

    • 8

Insert the cylinder lock into the side opening of the door and secure it using the two provided screws.

    • 9

Insert one part of the knob through the front knob hole and the other portion through the rear. Push them together and insert the two provided screws through the knob face plate to secure them.
