How to Build Two Doors That Meet in the Middle

Building two doors that meet in the middle is ideal for spanning extra-wide doorways, facilitating easy entrance and exit in high-traffic areas and setting up Old West saloon doors. These swinging doors can be made from a variety of materials and installed in a variety of configurations, but the basic steps of the construction and installation of the doors is fairly universal. Only basic tools and materials are needed to complete this project, and a basic familiarity with door installation and carpentry will help prevent stops and starts due to inconsistencies.

  • Saw
  • Sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the door with a tape measure. Subtract 3/4 inch for door clearance and divide the answer in half to find the width of each door. Measure the height of the door and subtract 1/4 inch from the number to find the height of each door. Transfer the height and width measurements to 3/4-inch-thick plywood boards and cut them out with a saw. Sand the edges until they are smooth.

    • 2

Set two of the cut plywood boards on top of each other and line them up evenly. Drill 1-inch wood screws through the top board and into the bottom, spacing the screws in a 2-foot grid. Attach the screws every foot along the edge of the boards, 2 inches from the edge of the boards. Repeat for the remaining two plywood boards to create the two doors.

    • 3

Set the door boards in the doorway with the help of an assistant. Evenly space two hinges along one side of each door and door frame. Mark the hinge screw holes and remove the hinges. Drill out each hole in both the frame and the door, being careful not to go through the door. Attach the hinges to the door with 1-inch wood screws and to the frame with 3-inch wood screws. Test the doors to make sure they are even, and adjust the screw placements if necessary to make them line up appropriately.

Choose one door to be the boltable door, if desired. Position the vertical double door bolts at the top and bottom of the door. Mark their screws holes and drill out each hole. Attach the bolts to the door with 1-inch wood screws. Drill out the necessary holes in the bottom and top of the door frame for the bolts to be pushed into.

Position a two-part latch between the two doors evenly. Mark the locations of the screw holes. Remove the latches and drill out the holes. Attach the latch parts to the doors with 1-inch wood screws. Mark the location of the latch portion on the edge of the bolted door if applicable. Drill out the marked section to allow the doors to latch into each other if the latch design requires it.
