How to Install Metal Doors in Concrete Walls

Metal doors make excellent firewalls and can be useful for keeping out the weather while adding extra security. Exterior doors should be treated with a weatherproof sealant to ensure that they will not rust due to exposure to moisture, whereas interior doors need no such sealant. These doors can be installed in all types of walls, though their installation in concrete walls requires additional tools, including a hammer drill, masonry drill bits and masonry screws.

Things You'll Need

  • Hammer drill
  • Masonry drill bits
  • 3-inch masonry screws
  • 1-inch masonry screws

Instructions

Position the metal door in place within the concrete door frame. Determine which direction you want the door to open and set the door with the hinges facing the proper direction to open on that side. Mark the location of each hinge screw attachment hole on the concrete door frame. Remove the door and set it aside.

    • 2

Drill into each marked hinge screw position with a masonry bit and a hammer drill. Make sure that the drill is set to the hammer position and on the highest power level. Back the drill bit out every so often to dump out the concrete dust that accumulates in the screw hole. Replace the masonry bit, as necessary, if the drill stops making forward progress into the concrete wall.

Reposition the door in the frame and line the hinges up with the drilled holes. Set 3-inch masonry screws into each hole partway then screw them in halfway until all the screws are in place. Tighten down the screws completely at this point to complete the door installation. Test the opening of the door and make any adjustments you need to allow for a perfect fit of the metal door within the doorway.

Hold the latch faceplate up to the concrete frame where the latch of the metal door lines up with it. Mark the location of the faceplate screw holes and the larger opening where the latch will click into place. Remove the faceplate and drill out each hole with the masonry bit. Drill out the larger opening with a larger masonry bit if necessary or simply drill it out bit by bit with the small masonry drill bit.

Set the faceplate into position on the concrete door frame and attach the faceplate to the frame with 1-inch masonry screws.
