How to Install a Storm Door Over Metal Wrapping

Position the screen door in place with the hinges set so the door swings outward. Adjust the door so that it perfectly frames the exterior of the doorway. Mark the location of the installation holes in the storm door hinges. Drill holes into the door frame at each of the markings, using a drill bit specially designed to drill into metal.

Reposition the storm door in place and set 3-inch galvanized wood screws with rubber washers through each hinge hole and into the wall holes. Set all the screws in place and tighten them halfway to confirm that the door is properly arranged and fits the frame. Tighten the screws completely to fully install the hinges tightly against the door. Open the door a few times to test the alignment, adjusting the screw positioning as needed to make the door straight.

Hold the latch face plate up against the door frame where the latch of the door lines up with the door frame. Mark the screw holes for the face plate attachment. Drill the holes into the door frame at each marking using a metal-specific drill bit. Align the faceplate with the holes and screw 1-inch galvanized screws with rubber washers into each hole.

Coat the door, hinges and latch hardware with a weatherproof external sealant for additional protection against weather.
