How to Install an Outside Door in a Brick Wall

Installing an outside door in a brick wall requires considerable work to make sure the installation is secure and weatherproof. Your outside door's frame must be installed securely to the brick surroundings. A lintel, or overhead support beam, needs to be attached above the door for proper support of the brickwork above the door. The entire project requires considerable experience with home repair or remodeling.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear out the opening in the brick wall with a reciprocating saw that has amasonry blade attached. Position a lintel in place at the top of the opening. Make any additional cuts necessary to attach the lintel under the top of the brick frame. Attach the lintel in place by drilling holes for each screw attachment with a hammer drill and a masonry drill bit. Make sure the hammer drill is on the hammer setting, and on the greatest power level. Attach 3-inch masonry screws in each hole.

Apply caulking around the edge of the brick frame and slide the frame of the door in place with the door already attached to the frame. Adjust the positioning of the frame using shims until the door opens and closes freely. Set each shim under the door frame and hammer it in place until it has propped the door up the necessary amount. Them you can break the shim off.

Drill through the attachment holes of the frame or create your own every 12 inches. Use a masonry bit and the hammer drill on the hammer setting. Back the drill out one or two times as you drill each hole to allow the brick debris to clear out of the hole. Replace the masonry bit if the drill no longer seems to be drilling deeper easily. Attach the frame in place with 3-inch masonry screws.
