How to Make a Letter Slot in a Screen Door

Due to the design of a screen door, you cannot purchase a traditional mail slot for installation on the door. A mail slot is generally designed for installation on a solid door. With a screen door, you have to cut your own slot in the door for mail and secure it in a nontraditional method. Standard mail slot hardware can be used on the screen door. You can make the letter slot on your own, with no construction expertise required.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at your screen door to determine the spot for your letter slot. You need to pick a place that is neither too high nor too low to be reached. Chest height is usually a good placement. Generally a letter slot is centered horizontally on the door.

    • 2

Use a tape measure to measure out a space for your letter slot. Place the mail slot you purchased up against the screen so that you can trace the outline with some chalk. A level can be used as well to be certain that you have the slot level.

    • 3

Take the screen door off its hinges so that you can lay it flat on a worktable or across two sawhorses. This placement will make it easier to cut the letter slot.

    • 4

Cut a hole in the screen door for the mail slot by using wire cutters and the chalk outline. You might want to wear gloves to avoid cutting or scratching your hands. Try not to cut the hole too big or your letter slot will not stay in place.

Apply adhesive to the perimeter of the hole you have created. You can use any type of glue, such as household repair cement, for your adhesive. Once you have the adhesive applied, set the letter slot in place. It will need to dry according to the instructions on the adhesive. Once dry, you can put the door back on its hinges.
