How to Install an Anderson Gliding Door

An Andersen sliding door features two glass panels that connects an interior space to a home's exterior, thereby extending entertainment space. One of the door's panels is stationary, while the other slides back and forth along the track. Whether you are replacing an old, outdated or damaged sliding door, or installing an Andersen sliding door for the first time, you can easily complete the task without professional assistance. Instructions

  1. Frame Assembly

    • 1

Apply a 1/8-inch-thick bead of silicone sealant over the unbeveled edges of the side jambs and sills.

    • 2

Hold the sill ends against the side jambs and drive the provided screws into the pre-drilled holes to attach the ends together. Also screw the inner side jamb to the sill, then the outer sill to the side jamb.

    • 3

Apply a 1/8-inch-thick bead of sealant over the upper edge of the side jamb and press it against the head jamb. Insert screws into the pre-drilled holes to secure the assembly before wiping off excess sealant.

    • 4

Insert the installation flanges into the grooves along the door frame. Tap these gently to drive them into the grooves.

    • 5

Set the aluminum head flange over the lip of the head flashing. Place this assembly into the head jamb’s groove, ensuring it overlaps the side flanges. Ensure the sill is level, or shim, if required. Then, measure the opening diagonally to ensure it is square and its measurements are within 1/8 inches.

    • 6

Spread a 1/2-inch bead of silicone 3 inches from the edge and along the lower end of the sill. Also fill the gap between the sill and side installation flange. Spread a 1/4-inch bead of silicone over the corners and inside of the side flanges and head.

    • 7

Clamp the Andersen sliding door frame in the doorway. Insert shims above and below the clamps and between the doorway and side jamb. Secure the shims in place using the provided screws.

    • 8

Attach the frame’s assembly to the doorway driving the provided screws into the pre-drilled holes. Remove the clamps. Insert insulation foam between the frame and opening from the inside. Apply a bead of sealant around the frame from the outside.

    Glass Door Panel Installation

    • 9

Insert the stationary panel into the frame, so its upper end fits snugly between the parting stop and screen guide, while lower end hangs above the sill guide. Drill 3/8-inch-deep holes in the panel using the holes in the stationary sill as a guide. Fasten the panel to the sill with the provided screws.

    • 10

Spread sealant vertically along the stationary panel and hold the provided weatherstrip against it. Drill 3/8-inch-deep holes in the panel and secure the sealant using provided screws.

    • 11

Stand the gliding glass panel against the frame, with its exterior side facing out. The lock side of this panel will be on the right if the stationary panel is to the left, or vice versa. Set the two handle plugs into the handle holes on the outside of this panel. Set the panel down.

    • 12

Spread sealant 3-inches on the operating panel, from the end along the vertical side. Lay the weatherstip over the sealant, drill 3/8-inch-deep holes into the panel and insert screws in the holes.

    • 13

Set this panel into the frame and slide it closed. Tip it inward to reattach the head stop to the head jamb. Drive screws into the holes into the jamb. Install your desired handle hardware according to the label’s directions.
