Instructions

    • 1

Lay out two plywood sheets on the working surface. Measure the width of the installation doorway and subtract a quarter of an inch for the width of the new door. Measure the height of the doorway and subtract half an inch for the height of the new door. Transfer these measurements to the two plywood sheets and cut out the door shape from each.

    • 2

Set the two boards on top of one another and screw them together using 1 1/4-inch wood screws screwed into the main surface of the board, about two inches from the edge. Space these screws every six inches. Put screws into the middle of this surface every 12 inches horizontally and vertically in a grid.

    • 3

Sand the edges of the boards to make the edges even, using a saw if necessary to cut out sections that do not match. Sand the entire surface of the board.

    • 4

Wipe off the door and apply a thin coat of paint or stain, applying in line with the wood grain. Let the first coat dry for two hours, and then apply a second coat. Continue to apply with this method until you are satisfied with the door color. Put on four coats of sealant, following this same process. Let the door dry overnight before installing it.

    • 5

Have an assistant hold the door up to the frame and position two hinges between the frame and the door, with each hinge about a foot from the top or bottom of the door, or line the door up with the old hinges. Mark the screw positions on the door and frame. Drill out each hole and attach the hinges to the door and frame with 1 1/4-inch wood screws.

    • 6

Determine the location for the doorknob, on the opposite edge of the door from the hinges, three feet up from the ground and four inches from the edge. Drill out a hole in the large surface of the door at the proper location and then drill another hole through the edge of the door and into this other hole. Pass the doorknob through the hole and attach it in place with the included hardware.

Position the faceplate against the frame even with the new doorknob. Mark the screw holes of the faceplate. Drill out the holes and the main hole for the latch within the faceplate. Attach the faceplate with 1 1/4-inch wood screws.
