How to Build a Door With Concealed Hinges

Many doors in a home install using standard hinges. These hinges show on the outside of the door where the door meets the wall. If you prefer a clean look to the door, concealed hinges offer a hidden alternative to standard hinges. These hinges install in much the same way, but sit inside a cubby built into the door’s edge and the doorframe so that they fit in the space where the door meets the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of a doorway into which you want to install the door with concealed hinges. Transfer these measurements onto a wood panel larger than the size of the doorway and cut the wood panel down to the measured size with a circular saw.

    • 2

Hold the cut panel into the doorway to make sure that it leaves no gaps at the edges. Take the door down from the doorway.

    • 3

Paint or stain the door in the color of your choice. Use as many coats as necessary to reach the color that you want and allow the paint or stain to dry. Cover the paint or stain with a thin, even layer of waterproof sealer and allow the sealer to fully dry.

    • 4

Drill holes into the side of the door where you want the handle for the doorknob and the lockset, in accordance with the directions provided by the manufacturer of the specific lock and set you have to install. Place the lockset and doorknob into the holes you created and use the included screws to secure the hardware in place.

    • 5

Measure up approximately 6 inches from the bottom of the door on the opposite side from the doorknob and lockset and mark the edge of the door. Measure down 6 inches from the top of the door on that side and mark the edge as well. Then, measure between the marks that you made and mark the door’s center.

    • 6

Create the cubbies for the concealed hinges that you want to install on the door. Use the dimensions provided with the hinges to determine the width, length and depth of the cubbies that you need to make. Use a drill to make the cubbies of this size on the door at the top mark, the bottom mark and centered over the center mark and install the concealed hinges to the cubbies in the door, using the provided screws.

Measure up from the bottom of the door to the bottom of each hinge that you attached. Transfer these measurements to the doorframe where you want to mount the door. Hold the door up to the doorframe to make sure the hinges line up with the marks that you made.

    • 8

Create the same cubbies in the doorframe that you made in the door, using the dimensions provided by the manufacturer. Once you have all three cubbies in place, hold the door up to the doorframe and secure the loose side of the hinge to the door with screws.
