Can I Install Trim All the Way Around a Bi-fold Door?

Most doors look best when they have some sort of trim -- bi-fold doors are no exception. Trim is applied around the perimeter of the door, covering the space between the wooden door casing and the wall. While bi-fold doors will work just fine without any molding trim, they will be more aesthetically pleasing with the added trim. Since bi-fold doors are often of a more simple construction than a basic door, they only need simple molding. The easiest way to apply molding trim to a bi-fold door is to use pre-finished molding -- that way, you won’t have to stain it.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the doorway at the top.

    • 2

Mark a piece of trim with the measured width of the doorway plus half an inch.

    • 3

Slide the trim under the blade of the miter saw so that the blade is on one of the marks. Turn the blade to point 45 degrees inward and cut the trim. Repeat on the mark on the other side of the trim.

    • 4

Position the trim on the top of the door’s opening so that the mitered ends line up with the corners of the door. There should be an extra quarter inch on each side of the trim, extending past the door casing. Secure the trim by nailing it in every foot along both the top and bottom of the piece of trim.

    • 5

      Measure the door vertically.

    • 6

Mark a piece of trim with the measured height of the doorway, adding half an inch.

    • 7

Slide the trim under the miter blade, lining the blade up with one of the marks. Cut the top part of the trim at a 45-degree angle. Cut the bottom part of the trim straight across.

    • 8

Position the trim on the side of the of the door opening so that the mitered end lines up with mitered end of the top piece of trim. As in Step 4, there will be an extra quarter inch extending past the casing. The two mitered pieces should form a 90-degree angle when placed together. Secure the trim by nailing it in every foot along both sides of the piece of trim.

Measure, cut and install the second vertical piece of trim just as the first one was measured, cut and installed.
