How To Replace Bifold Doors with a Room Divider

Though single-piece doors may represent the most common divider in doorways, numerous types of room separators exist. Bi-fold doors, for instance, cover a doorway like a standard door, but fold up according-style as they open so they don't swing out as far into the room. If you prefer to remove a bi-fold door, a room divider is an appropriate replacement.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the bi-fold door to expose the hinges that hold the door in place on the door frame. Remove the screws from the hinges with a screwdriver. Take the door down from the frame.

    • 2

Fill in the screw holes with wood filler if you don’t want visible holes on the door frame where you intend to install the room divider. Once the wood filler dries in the screw holes, sand the filler down with fine-grit sandpaper until the holes feel even with the rest of the door frame. Paint the filled holes with the same color of paint used on the rest of the frame.

    • 3

Measure the width of the door frame into which you want to place the room divider. Measure the height of the door frame to determine how tall the divider should be to fit the space.

    • 4

Install a track of the same width as the doorway at the top of the door frame if you want to install a roll-up room divider or hanging divider. Screw the track into the top of the door frame with screws about 1 1/2 inches long.

    • 5

Slide the top of the roll-up or hanging divider into the track at the top of the door frame. Use a roll-up divider if you want to be able to get through the doorway and a solid hanging divider only if you don’t want to use the door.

    • 6

Choose a room divider that sits on the floor if you want a less permanent divider in the space where the bi-fold doors were removed. Set the room divider on the floor in the doorway. Fold the divider inward or extend the divider outward to make it fit the available space.
