How to Fix Gaps in a Lowered Ceiling

Lowered ceilings install on brackets that extend a few inches beneath the permanent ceiling of a room. The main surface of the ceiling consists of lightweight tiles, which fit inside the openings in these brackets. When gaps appear in a lowered ceiling, it generally means that the brackets have shifted, which prevents the tiles from sitting in them properly. To fix gaps in a lowered ceiling, you must return the brackets to their original positions.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the tiles in the area of the lowered ceiling where the gaps appear. Push each problem tile up into the opening between the tiles, tilt the tile and angle it down through the opening.

    • 2

Aim a flashlight above the lowered ceiling brackets to look at the wiring of the brackets. If you see any wires that have come loose, start with those sections of the bracket wiring. Tighten any wiring that has come loose from the premade holes in the brackets themselves by pinching them with pliers until they hold tightly on the brackets.

    • 3

Stand beneath the area where the ceiling gaps and move directly below each spot where two brackets cross. Aim the flashlight directly up from below to make sure the vertical wire above lines up directly with the spot where the brackets cross.

    • 4

Slide the vertical wire that connects to that cross section of the brackets along the horizontal wire to which it is attached until it lines up with the cross in the brackets below if the wire doesn’t line up directly. Tighten the vertical wire where it wraps around the horizontal wire with pliers to ensure a secure connection.

    • 5

Place the tiles back into the brackets to see if gaps still appear in the ceiling. If the gaps have been eliminated, check the entire ceiling because moving the wires may cause gapping in other sections.

    • 6

Repeat the process of checking to see if the wires line up for any section in which you find gaps in the lowered ceiling. Continue until you have lined up all of the wires in the ceiling structure perfectly with the brackets below and have tightened all wires to eliminate gapping throughout the entire ceiling.
