How to Select Fluorescent Drop Ceiling Fixtures

Suspended, or drop, ceilings feature a grid frame that accepts lightweight panels of acoustical tile. You can integrate fluorescent light fixtures in key places to provide light to the room. Typical fixtures rest within the framework but hang from their own support brackets. You can put as many or as few fixtures as you wish. The only limitation is the availability of ceiling power outlets for the fixtures.
  1. Function

    • Typical fluorescent lights for suspended ceilings have two sockets that accept long fluorescent bulbs, but some fixtures accept a single circular bulb. The brightness of the light depends on the wattage of the bulbs you use. For each square yard of room space, you’ll need at least 16 watts to achieve a normal level of light, according to the book “Popular Mechanics Home Repairs & Improvements” by Albert Jackson and David Day.

    Planning

    • Before you shop for fluorescent fixtures, create a lighting design. Determine how many bulbs of a particular wattage you’ll need to evenly distribute a sufficient amount of light across your room. Some areas of the room, such as a work bench or desk area, might benefit from extra light. Install fixtures directly over these areas and distribute the remaining lights as needed across the less vital areas. Discuss your plans with the licensed electrician you hire to install ceiling power outlets for the fluorescent lights. Having a clear layout beforehand will prevent miscommunications and mistakes later.

    Distribution

    • Generally, you should distribute multiple light fixtures across the ceiling to ensure even coverage throughout the room. But some lighting designs involve a long series of adjacent fixtures rather than an even distribution across the ceiling. In this case, the most effective wiring solution is to buy fluorescent fixtures you can install in a single series, all drawing from a common power source. The other alternative is to run independent wires from each fixture to the power outlet, which is less efficient.

    Diffuser Panel

    • Plastic diffuser panels hang below the light fixtures, softening the glare of the bulbs. Many design patterns are available, with varying levels of translucency. Choose the type that suits your lighting needs and that matches your room decor and acoustical tile pattern.
