How to Add Beams to a Vaulted Ceiling

The addition of vaulted ceiling beams adds interest to the ceiling without affecting the structure. Ceiling beams are available in a wide variety of synthetic materials, such as urethane, and are made to look like wood. While the beams may be awkward to maneuver, the faux beam is lightweight. Beam installation is a simple task even for someone with limited carpentry skills. It’s possible to purchase the beams already stained or painted the desired color, or you can paint them to suit your needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the inside cavity of the faux beams you are installing. Measure the length of the ceiling ridge as well.

    • 2

Cut blocks of 2-by-4 lumber the width of the inside cavity, using a circular saw. Cut enough blocks so you can place two pieces every 3 to 6 feet of length of the ceiling ridge.

    • 3

Drill two pilot holes in each of the blocks to help prevent the wood from splitting as you install it.

    • 4

Attach one block 12 inches from the wall across the ceiling ridge. Use screws long enough to penetrate the block, the sheetrock on the ceiling and at least 1 inch into the roof structure on both sides of the cathedral ceiling.

    • 5

Secure the second block directly on top of the first one with screws. Continue placing all the blocks along the ceiling ridge 3 to 6 feet apart with the last set of blocks 12 inches from the wall.

    • 6

Place painter’s tape on the ceiling on either side of the blocks to help you identify the location of the blocks as you attach the faux beam. Do not place the tape close to the blocks as you might cover it up with the beam.

    • 7

Measure and cut the faux beam the length of the ceiling ridge, using a circular saw.

    • 8

Hold the beam in place against the ridge and over the wooden blocks. Using the painter’s tape as a guide, place a screw into the faux beam and the wooden block beneath it. Set another screw in the opposite side of the beam and the block underneath. Continue securing the beam to the blocks in this manner. Do not over tighten the screws. Remove the painter’s tape.

Use your finger to cover the screws with wood putty. Smooth the putty with your finger once you apply it.
