Measure the ceiling width to determine the length of the open beams. Determine the positioning and spacing between adjacent ceiling beams.
Run a stud finder across the ceiling and mark the locations of studs. Measure the spacing between the studs at which you will be installing the beams.
Measure and cut a 1-by-6-inch board to the ceiling length using a handsaw. This board will anchor the beam to the ceiling. Measure and mark the spacing between the studs over this board.
Bore a pilot hole through each marked location on the board for the mounting hardware. Hold this board on the ceiling, and drive a 2-inch screw through the pilot holes and into the corresponding studs to anchor it in place.
Cut a 1-by-6-inch board to the same length as the previous board to form the front of the beam, or the section that faces the floor. Also cut two 1-by-8-inch boards for the sides of the beam.
Lay the 1-by-6 on a table and spread a thin layer of wood glue over each side. Lay a 1-by-8 on each glued side, with the 1-inch sides adhering to the adhesive. Allow the glue to dry for the time specified on the label's directions before hammering 2 1/2-inch finishing nails through the sides of the 1-by-6 to secure the assembly. Ensure the corners of this three-sided beam are square.
Place the three-sided beam over the 1-by-6 you attached to the ceiling. Hammer 2 1/2-inch nails through the 1-by-8-inch lumber and into the board on the ceiling to secure the beam in place. Cover the heads with tinted wood putty. Repeat this process to install the remaining beams.
