How to Install IKO Roofing

IKO is the commercial name for a type of asphalt roof shingles. Roof shingles made of asphalt are one of the most popular roof covering solutions. Asphalt shingles are inexpensive, fairly durable and easy to install. Also, their neutral color complements any home and makes the roof more attractive. There are many different types of IKO asphalt products, from fiberglass-based shingles to laminated and slate shingles. If you want to cover your roof with IKO shingles, simply choose the style you want and follow the installation guidelines.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your roof to see how much material you will need. You can do it by measuring the sides of your house and then calculating the approximate area. When you have the square footage of your roof, divide it by 100 and then multiply by 3 to get the number of bundles of IKO shingles you will need. Add 15 percent for mistakes, waste, rakes and ridge caps.

    • 2

Check the condition of the roof's wooden construction before installing the under layer and make any repairs if necessary.

    • 3

Install the under layer for the IKO shingles. This layer can be simple tar paper, felt or another one that is compatible with IKO shingles and recommended by the manufacturer. Roll out the under layer across the roof, making rows that overlap by 2 inches, and staple each row to the roof using a staple gun. Note that you can install IKO roofing over existing roof shingles, but check with officials about the specifics of the building code.

    • 4

Lay a strip of starter shingles at the eaves first. This will be a backing or a base for the first row of shingles and a water dam for the roof as well. Let the shingles in the starter strip hang over the edge by 5/8 inch.

    • 5

Fasten the IKO shingles with a minimum of four fasteners per shingle. The fasteners should be installed below the sealant strip and above the cutout. If you are laying laminated shingles, install fasteners in the nail line. For the fasteners, use roofing nails recommended by the manufacturer or indicated on the package. Use either a hammer or a nail gun. For IKO shingles, nails are considered to be a safer and stronger option than roof staples.

    • 6

Draw chalk lines along your roof to ensure that you are installing IKO shingles in straight rows. The chalk line should be every 6 to 10 inches, depending on the size of the IKO shingles you are using.

    • 7

Continue installing row after row of IKO asphalt shingles on your roof. Start from the bottom edge and work your way up to the ridge. For a proper pattern, check the instructions on the package of your particular IKO shingle model.

    • 8

Trim any shingle overhang on the row of shingles on the edge of the roof. Cut the shingles with tin snips.

    • 9

Install ridge caps all along the ridge of your roof. Fasten them in place the same way as the other shingles.
