How to Install Crown Molding Using a Miter Saw

The most important tool in a crown molding installation is a miter saw. You'll use it to cut the angle of the molding to joins the ends together on adjacent walls. You can cut crown molding with a miter saw by first determining how much crown molding you need for the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of each wall with the tape measure and then add the length of each wall together to determine how much crown molding you need for the room.

    • 2

Set the 360-degree adjustable protractor on the inside or outside corner where two walls meet and read the angle on the dial. Write down the angle on a piece of paper.

    • 3

Set the miter angle and blade tilt on the miter saw to a right-hand inside angle you noted on the paper. Set the piece of crown molding on the table of the miter saw. Press the trigger on the handle and pull the blade down to cut the miter angle in the crown molding. Repeat this step for the left-hand inside angle.

    • 4

Place the ends of the two pieces together to see how they will fit on the inside of the wall.

    • 5

Set the miter angle of the miter saw to a right-hand outside angle you noted on the paper. Press the trigger and cut the angle. Repeat this step for the left-hand outside angle.

    • 6

Place the ends together to verify that the cuts were correct.

    • 7

Attach the crown molding to the wall with the nail gun.
