Tips for Covering Batt Insulation Above a Dropped Ceiling

Insulating above a drop ceiling with fiberglass can help reduce heat loss and save on energy costs. However, laying one layer of fiberglass over the drop ceiling is less effective than covering the fiberglass with another material. This creates a thicker barrier and covers the batt insulation seams significantly, increasing the effectiveness of the insulation.
  1. More Fibreglass

    • Covering the fiberglass above the drop ceiling with another layer of fiberglass batt insulation can be very effective in preventing heat loss. Roll the batts perpendicular to the batts that were originally rolled out. This covers the seams, preventing air infiltration and increasing the R-value of the insulation system.

    Blow in Cellulose

    • Blowing cellulose insulation over the top of fiberglass is one of the most effective ways to gain extra R-value and eliminate air penetration. Cellulose ground-up newspaper that has fire retardant chemicals added to it also serves as a pesticide and rodent deterrent. Cellulose can be installed in awkward spaces so it is suitable for hard-to-reach areas above a drop ceiling.

    Reflectix

    • Reflectix reflective coverings have a reflective side that reduces heat penetration. The reflective coating is rolled out over the fiberglass and overlapped at the seams to create to large reflective surface. This prevents heat from penetrating through the fiberglass on hot days. It also acts as a barrier to keep heat from escaping on cold winter days.
