How to Insulate a Garage Attic

If you plan on heating your garage during the winter, you should insulate the ceiling so heat does not escape too quickly. This is, by far, the best thing you can do if you want a warmer garage. An insulated garage will heat up three times faster than an uninsulated garage and will hold the heat much better. You can buy rolls of fiberglass insulation at your local builder's store. Installation is not too difficult as long as you cut the insulation into smaller, more manageable pieces.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of your garage. Count how many trusses you'll need to fill with insulation. Multiply the length of the garage by the number of trusses to find out how much insulation you should purchase.

    • 2

Partially unroll the fiberglass insulation. Measure out a manageable piece. If you have a smaller garage, you may be able to measure out the entire length. For larger garages, working with a piece one-half to one-third the length you need to cover may be more manageable.

    • 3

Lay a piece of plywood underneath the insulation. Use a box cutter to cut through the insulation. Cut along something with a firm, straight edge--such as a level--for a cleaner cut.

    • 4

Push the piece of insulation up and into the garage truss. Staple the paper edges to the wooden truss with a staple gun to hold the insulation in place. Make sure the insulation stays tight in the truss.

    • 5

Place a staple every 4 to 6 inches along the length of the truss. Staple the paper to the side of the truss instead of the bottom if you're planning to drywall the ceiling.

Measure and cut another piece of insulation and continue the process until the entire ceiling has been insulated.
