Ways to Finish a Basement Ceiling

Remodeling your basement into a usable room, such as a family room, home theater or home office, is a way to extend the living space in your home. The ceilings in a basement are lower than the other rooms in your house and often have ductwork and visible wires. To create a room that does not look like a basement, you must take steps to finish the ceiling.
  1. Drywall and Paint

    • Using drywall on your basement ceiling requires hard work and some assistance. You can hire someone to install the drywall or install it yourself with some assistance. Drywall is relatively easy to decorate with paint, tile or by adding texturing techniques to coordinate with your room decor.

    Suspended Ceiling

    • Suspended ceilings allow you to hide ductwork and wires that take away from the beauty of your basement room. A suspended ceiling does lower the height of the room, which can make the basement room feel cramped. Use suspended ceiling tiles in areas where there is ductwork and drywall in the center of the room for a creative way to give your basement room height.

    Boxing Ductwork

    • Box the ductwork in and other areas that you must have access to on the basement ceiling. The boxes camouflage the ductwork and create an interesting look for your basement ceiling. Boxing the ductwork, along with painting the middle area of the ceiling a lighter color, can create the illusion of height in the room.

    Wood Floor Planks

    • Laminate floor planks on the basement ceiling give a rustic appearance to the room. The planks come in a variety of styles and colors such as wood grain. The flooring material snaps together and can attach to the flooring joists on the ceiling.

    Vinyl Siding

    • Use tongue and groove siding material to cover the ceiling in the basement. You may have to make accommodations for ductwork and pipes to allow access to these areas. Siding comes in colors that can create an attractive and colorful look in your basement room.
