How to Put Molding on a Curved Ceiling

Curved ceilings add architectural beauty to any home. Molding can enhance the look of a curved ceiling and make it stand out. The problem is that most moldings are made from straight pieces of wood. This makes it difficult to install these moldings on a curved ceiling. The good news is that you can purchase and install flexible moldings. These moldings look, sand and paint just like a wood molding.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the molding as desired. Painting the molding before installation is much easier than trying to paint it when it is installed on the ceiling.

    • 2

Measure the area on the ceiling where the molding is going to be installed with a measuring tape.

    • 3

Transfer the ceiling measurements to the flexible molding with a pencil.

    • 4

Place the flexible molding on the table of a miter saw. Cut the flexible molding to size on the saw. Set the saw to a 45 degree angle to make corner cuts in the molding.

    • 5

Load a tube of polyurethane construction adhesive into a caulk gun. Cut the tip of the tube with a utility knife.

    • 6

Spread a small bead of construction adhesive on the back of the flexible ceiling molding. Recruit a partner to help you lift and hold the molding in place on the curved ceiling.

    • 7

Secure the molding with a 16 gauge finish nail gun. Place a nail every 12 inches on the molding. This will hold the molding in place until the construction adhesive dries and keeps the molding in place on the ceiling. Let the construction adhesive dry per manufacturer directions, or approximately three to four hours.

Load a tube of caulk into a caulk gun. Cut the tip of the tube with a utility knife. Spread a bead of caulk along the gap between the molding and the ceiling. Smooth the caulk with your finger. Let the caulk dry per manufacturer directions.
