How to Use a Texture Hopper Gun for a Ceiling

A texture hopper gun can be used to create a wide variety of textures for a ceiling, including popcorn, orange peel and knockdown textures. Depending on the design of the gun, you may need to fill the hopper only partway with drywall mud to avoid spillage if the hopper is connected directly to the gun. It is also important to cover any surfaces that you do not want to get messy when applying the ceiling texture.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover all walls and floors with plastic sheeting and masking tape to avoid getting texture material on any other surfaces.

    • 2

Mix the texture material, or drywall mud, in a 5-gallon bucket, according to the instructions on the bag. The mixture ratio will depend on the type of texture being applied.

    • 3

Connect the air compressor hose to the gun and turn on the air compressor.

    • 4

Add texture material to the hopper of the gun. It is best to start with a small amount at first.

    • 5

Holding the gun 1 foot to 2 feet from the ceiling, pull the trigger to spray the texture material on the ceiling. Use slow, smooth movements to keep the texture material as even as possible.

    • 6

Add more texture material to the hopper as necessary, checking the consistency and stirring when needed.
