How to Layout Fluorescent Lighting

Fluorescent lighting is a common addition to a home. The most common locations for the lights are in utility rooms and garages. You need to create a design layout when planning to install fluorescent lighting to ensure you have enough light in these often dark rooms. A standard 23-watt fluorescent bulb will put out about 1,600 lumens. A light fixture with two bulbs will then put out about 3,200 lumens, covering a few feet below the light. This will guide you in determining how many lights to install in your area.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the ceiling area with a tape measure in the room you will install the fluorescent light fixtures.

    • 2

Divide the length or width area by the light coverage from each fluorescent fixture. For example, if a light fixture claims it will provide four feet of lighted space, a room 20-foot wide needs five fixtures.

    • 3

Plan for more light over work spaces. Lights should be more prevalent over a workbench in a garage rather than over the area you park your car.

    • 4

Visit a local lighting store to see what types of fluorescent fixtures they offer. Compare your measurements with information they offer for planning your light fixture layout.
