Installing Ceiling Fan Supports

Whether you are changing your ceiling fan to a new model or installing a ceiling fan into a room with no prior installation, the fan needs a support mount in order to prevent damage to the ceiling. The process to install the mounting bracket is similar with all fans and can be directly followed by installing the ceiling fan. The entire process can successfully be completed by a novice in 90 minutes and by a professional in 30 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from the sides of the room to find the center, check to ensure there is no joist near the center with a stud finder and measure to make sure two joists can be reached within a 24-inch span by the support bar.

    • 2

Mark an outline of the fan box in the center of the ceiling, using a pencil, so the outline of the box is on the ceiling. Then cut the shape out with a drywall saw.

    • 3

Remove insulation from the area until you are able to access the two joists. If it is easier, you can remove the insulation from the attic if you have one.

    • 4

Insert the support bar into the hole, keeping it in the center of the hole while you untwist it to reach both joists. Keep extending the support bar until you have a firm hold between the two joists.

    • 5

Place the U-bolt assembly over the bar, centered in the hole so that the bolts are facing down.

    • 6

Slide the cables through the connector and into the mounting box and secure the box by tightening the nuts. Then, push the wires through the mounting plate and secure the plate by tightening the bolts. Continue to install the ceiling fan according to manufacturer's instructions.
