Tin Ceiling Tile Installation

Tin ceilings are a classic addition to any room of your home. Most often, tin ceilings are found in older homes as a decorative element. However, tin ceilings can be installed in newer homes for a traditional look. Tin ceilings are easy to install when you use tin ceiling tiles. The tiles are smaller than large sheets and easier to work with. If installed correctly, you do not need to use glue or adhesive to install the tin ceiling tiles.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the ceiling joists. Use an electric stud finder and a pencil to mark each joist in the ceiling. Mark the line so that you can also see it on the walls.

    • 2

Install ¼ inch plywood on the ceiling. Measure the ceiling with a measuring tape and then transfer the measurements to the plywood. Use a circular saw to cut the plywood to size. Fix the plywood directly to the ceiling joists with screws.

    • 3

Find the centerpoint above the most commonly used doorway and mark it with a chalk line. Use this line as the starting point for the tin ceiling tiles.

    • 4

Begin installing the ceiling tiles. Set the tiles in place along the marked chalk line. Nail the tiles in place with a brad nailer, angling the nails slightly. Two sides of the panel should remain unfastened so you can slide the next tiles under the edges. Space the brad nails approximately six inches apart. Install all of the ceiling tiles. Use tin snips to cut the tiles to size as necessary.

Tap the seams between the ceiling tiles together with a 1-by-4 inch block. Hold the block at a 45-degree angle on the seams and tap it with a hammer.
