Low Cost Way to Soundproof a Basement Ceiling

Soundproofing your basement ceiling in the course of a basement renovation is one of the best upgrades you can perform. Not only will soundproofing help deaden the noise of stomping feet from above, but people in the upstairs rooms of the home won't have to listen to every sound made in the basement, whether it be a game room or movie room. While studio-quality soundproofing is difficult, you can install basic insulation between your floor joists for a quick, effective noise reduction, and save some money on energy bills as well.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Position the fiberglass insulation under the beams on which it will be mounted. The insulation is composed of a pink or yellow side, which is the insulation, and a paper backing that extends approximately 2 inches past the insulation. The insulation will fit between the floor joists of the basement, and the paper backing provides room for the insulation to be stapled to the ceiling joists themselves.

    • 2

Unroll the insulation on the floor and then measure the ceiling's length to determine how long the insulation will have to be. For instance, if the room is 12 feet by 12 feet, the insulation will have to be cut in 12-foot lengths. Extra insulation pieces left over from trimming the rolls can be used together to make up a 12-foot length later, if necessary.

Position the insulation under the floor joists where it will be installed, then raise the insulation from the floor. Push the insulation into the gap between the floor joists so that the paper backing is facing downward, and then use the staple gun to secure the insulation's paper backing to the wooden floor joist. Install the insulation in this manner until all of the basement ceiling's floor joists are filled with insulation.
