How Can I Hang My Ceiling Fan on a Trussed Ceiling?

Ceiling fans are generally designed to hang from flat, horizontal ceilings as the fan blades travel in a horizontal plane. But that doesn't mean you can't install a fan if you've got a trussed, sloped or cathedral ceiling. You can buy a special angled bracket that connects to the ceiling's electrical box and adjusts to provide a horizontal surface on which to mount the fan. Get a fan with a down-rod long enough so the fan blades will clear the angle of the ceiling.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity to the existing light fixture at the main circuit box.

    • 2

Take down the fixture by removing the screws around the edges of it and lowering it enough to disconnect the wires behind it. You should be left with a black wire and a white wire, both with exposed ends, hanging from the box. There should also be a bare copper ground wire.

    • 3

Mount the angled ceiling fan bracket to the ceiling's electrical box with the screws that came with the bracket. Hold a level along the bottom of the bracket and adjust the bracket with the adjustment screw on the side of it until it reads level.

    • 4

Hook the copper grounding wire from the electrical box around the green grounding screw on the mounting bracket. Tighten the screw.

    • 5

Assemble the fan unit on the floor, installing the extension rod onto the fan housing as directed. The rod should have a white and a black wire running through it. Leave the fan blades off for now.

    • 6

Take the fan unit up the ladder and position it near the angled bracket. Hook up the black wire coming out of the top of the extension rod to the black wire from the electrical box, twisting a wire cap over both of them. Repeat for the white wires.

    • 7

Raise the top of the extension rod to the bracket and mount it there with the provided screws, tucking the wire connections up into the bracket. Put on the blades as instructed. Turn on the power at the circuit box.
