Ideas for Funky Ceiling Tile Art Crafts

Dropped ceilings are often used to lower a room's ceiling height or to hide pipes and HVAC systems. These ceilings are comprised of tiles that slide into a metal grid that holds them in place. Painting the tiles with funky art is one way to liven up your ceiling. It is easier to paint them if you first remove them from the grid. Note that painting the ceiling tiles may void any warranty still left on them.
  1. Quilt

    • Remove the tiles from the metal grid. Put a latex primer on each tile with a paint roller to prevent it from curling up. Let the primer dry. Sketch a quilt pattern onto each tile. Note which colors you will use for each part of the pattern. Assign each color a number, and number the tile parts accordingly. Paint the pattern onto each tile with latex paint, and let it dry. Slide the tiles into place on the ceiling grid.

    Chessboard

    • After the primer has dried, paint the ceiling tiles white and black or cream and black to resemble a chessboard. Reinstall the tiles into the metal ceiling grid. Cut out black and white chess pieces from thin vinyl. Place the chess pieces onto the chessboard with removable sticky tabs that you can find at a craft or hardware store. Move the pieces around whenever you like to simulate a chess game.

    Sports Team Logos

    • Prime the ceiling tiles and let them dry. Sketch the logos from your favorite sports teams onto each ceiling tile; paint the logos. Experiment with sparkling paint to outline each team's logo to give the tiles an extra eye-catching touch. Paint some ceiling tiles to resemble the sports jerseys and numbers of your favorite team's players. Replace the ceiling tiles, scattering the logos and jerseys throughout the ceiling grid.

    Constellations

    • When the primer is dry, paint the ceiling tiles black to resemble the nighttime sky. Paint the metal ceiling grid with glow-in-the-dark paint that you can find at a paint or hardware store. Let both the ceiling tiles and the metal ceiling grid dry completely. Paint glowing star constellations on some tiles and leave the other ceiling tiles black. Let the star constellations dry completely. Put the ceiling tiles back into the ceiling grid.
