How to Put a Subwoofer in the Attic

If you are installing a home theater or stereo system but want to conceal as many of the electronic components and speakers as possible, you can do so using the attic. Because a subwoofer is not a completely directional speaker as are the smaller speakers, it needs to be "pointed" in only a general direction. That makes the attic a possible location, as the bass will be delivered into the room from above.

Things You'll Need

  • Stool or ladder
  • Stud finder
  • Marker
  • Safety glasses
  • Drop cloth
  • Drill
  • Reciprocating saw
  • Screw gun
  • Mounting brackets
  • Speaker screen or return air grate

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location to mount your subwoofer from the room. In front of the television is a good position for a home theater system.

    • 2

Step up on a stool or small ladder. Place a stud finder against the ceiling to find the nearest rafters. Mark the rafter locations.

    • 3

Put on safety glasses and lay a drop cloth under the marked rafters. Drill pilot holes into the ceiling to create a template for cutting out the ceiling where the subwoofer will be mounted.

    • 4

Drill a hole in the wall behind the home theater or stereo system to run the subwoofer wires up to the attic.

    • 5

Go into the attic and find the pilot holes in the ceiling. Insert the blade of a reciprocating saw into one of the pilot holes and cut a hole in the ceiling.

    • 6

Run a fish tape down between the wall, close to where the wiring will run up from the system. Go back into the room and wrap the subwoofer wires around the fish tape. Return to the attic and pull the wires up.

    • 7

Carry the subwoofer up to the attic. Fasten mounting brackets to the rafters and set the subwoofer into the brackets. This process will vary, depending on the size, shape of the subwoofer and the mounting brackets used.

    • 8

Return to the room and cover the subwoofer's face with a speaker screen or fasten an air intake grate to the ceiling to conceal the subwoofer. Connect the wiring that was run up to the subwoofer to the system.
