How to Use Glitter Glaze on a Ceiling

Ceiling treatments such as texturing help soften rooms and muffle sounds. However, glazes provide further decorative possibilities. Imbue a room with a sense of magnificence by glitter glazing the ceiling. Glitter glazes consist of a transparent medium containing suspended flecks of sparkling glitter. Once applied to a ceiling, the light in the room will take on a whole new role, serving to illuminate the subtle shimmer of the glitter. Like a star-filled night sky, the shimmer will delight family members and guests.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove furniture from the room. Mask the top edges of adjacent walls with painter's tape or masking paper. Cover the floor and any fixtures in drop cloths.

    • 2

Paint the ceiling with a coat of primer if the ceiling currently has a gloss finish. Forgo primer if the ceiling has a matte finish. Apply primer to the ceiling in long, overlapping strokes, using a paint roller with an extended handle. Use heavier napped rollers for textured ceilings.

    • 3

Dilute the glitter glaze with extender to make the glaze last longer and to create a subtler shimmer. For more concentrated sparkles on the ceiling, apply the glaze straight, without extender. Do not dilute glaze or add more extender than recommended in the manufacturers' instructions. Optionally, add a few drops of paint tint for a subtle, transparent coloration to the glaze. Stir the glaze, extender and tint thoroughly to guarantee that everything, especially the flecks of glitter, are evenly dispersed.

Apply glitter glaze with a paintbrush or roller, using long, successive strokes and keeping the working edge wet. Keep an eye on the consistency of the glitter, adding glaze in places where it looks as if there isn't enough and blotting away glaze with a clean lint cloth when there is too much glitter.
