Remove all furnishings from the room or move them to the center and cover them with a large tarp. Hang tarp or plastic sheets over the doorways to prevent Durock dust from spreading throughout the home. Cover all of the vents in the room with plastic to prevent drawing the dust into the heating or air conditioning and distributing it through the house.
Attach 100-grit sandpaper to a pole sander head. Some pole sander heads require the manufacturer's specified brand of sandpaper to fit properly on the head while others make use of any brand of sandpaper. Check the pole sander head manufacturer's instructions for the correct sandpaper.
Twist the pole sander head onto a telescoping pole. One end of the telescoping hole has threads that the pole sander head screws onto to hold it tightly to the sanding head.
Lift the pole sander toward the ceiling. Position the sandpaper side of the pole sander head against the ceiling. Move the pole sander head back and forth over the area you are sanding while maintaining even pressure against the ceiling. Progress along the joint compound line or other area you are sanding. Continue to move the sanding head over the entire ceiling until you sand all of the high spots and uneven ceiling surfaces.
