How to Catch Dust When Drilling Overhead

Drilling creates dust and debris. When you're drilling overhead, that dust and debris can spread, getting in your hair, your eyes and all over the room in which you are drilling. Preventing the mess is far better than cleaning up after you're done drilling. Use simple household items you're likely to have on hand to catch the dust and debris made by drilling and you'll save yourself the time and frustration of cleaning up later.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum with hose attachment
  • Drill

Instructions

  1. Vacuum

    • 1

      Plug in your vacuum cleaner.

    • 2

Position the vacuum so the hose attachment reaches the spot where you are drilling. Move the vacuum onto a piece of furniture if needed.

    • 3

Turn on the vacuum and hold the hose next to the drill bit while you're drilling. The vacuum sucks up the dust created by drilling and contains it.

    Paper

    • 4

Tape three corners of a piece of paper to the ceiling with low tack painter's tape. Ensure the center of the paper is below the drill spot. Leave the fourth corner loose so you can access the location where you need to drill.

    • 5

Drill the hole, taking care not to tear the paper or pull down on it.

    • 6

Remove the tape and fold the paper in on itself to contain any dust and debris and throw it away.
