The Type of Ceilings for a Kitchen

When designing your kitchen, you may not give much thought to the type of ceiling that you choose. However, your kitchen's ceiling can play a significant role in not only how the room looks but how it feels as well. Several types of ceilings work well in a kitchen, so you can choose an option that helps open up the space, makes it feel warmer and cozier or makes it one of your home's most impressive rooms.
  1. Dropped Ceiling

    • As its name implies, a dropped ceiling is actually dropped down from the natural height of the ceiling. It is an ideal option if your kitchen contains structural elements that you wish to hide, such as recessed light fixtures, air ducts or beams or if you need to conceal surface damage on the ceiling. A dropped ceiling provides a cozy feeling since it closes in a room, so it works well in a large kitchen that may feel cold or sterile. You can also use a drop ceiling in part of your kitchen if you want to create a defined dining area.

    Tray Ceiling

    • A tray ceiling is an ideal option if you wish to add a more decorative element to your kitchen. The ceiling features a flat center panel that is raised slightly and is connected to the wall by sloped planes that angle downward. It gives your kitchen a more traditional look and increases the height of the room to make it feel larger. It also provides many interesting decorating possibilities for your kitchen. You can cover the flat panel with colorful tiles or wallpaper, and paint the sloped portions in a complementary color. You can also add crown molding to the corners for added detail. A tray ceiling is suited for a variety of lighting options as well, including track, rope and recessed. You can also hang a pendant light from the flat panel to make a statement in the center of your kitchen.

    Beamed Ceiling

    • If you prefer a rustic or country look, a beamed ceiling is an attractive option for your kitchen. The ceiling is supported by structural beams made of wood, which add detail and texture to the surface. Beamed ceilings provide many design options as you can paint the beams to match the ceiling surface or leave them with a natural wood finish for a more rugged feel. You can even paint them with a contrasting color for a bold look. Decorative beams that serve no structural purpose are also available, so you can install them to provide the look of a true beamed ceiling even if your kitchen ceiling doesn't require support.

    Cathedral Ceiling

    • For a dramatic look in your kitchen, a cathedral ceiling is the ideal option. This type of ceiling follows the roof line of your house, so it has a high central ridge and a peak at the top. It has a very elegant look and gives your kitchen a wide, open feel. Because of its grandiose look, it is best used in a kitchen that is one of the home's focal points. In particular, it works well if your kitchen opens into the family room or living room because it widens the space and creates a distinct area for the kitchen.
