How to Adhere Crown Molding to a Concrete Wall

Crown molding is often used at the border between a wall and a ceiling to add a decorative flair. It is typically nailed in place, but if you are attaching it to a concrete wall, nails are not a convenient option. You will instead adhere the crown molding with construction adhesive, which is designed to be used with concrete. Some surface preparation is required before you glue the molding in place to ensure that the bond will be strong.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Concrete

    • 1

Wash the concrete with soapy water and a scrub brush with soft bristles.

    • 2

Scrub a degreasing product into the concrete to completely remove any built-up grime that could interfere with adhesion.

    • 3

Rinse the concrete with clean water.

    • 4

Allow the concrete to dry completely. Speed the process with fans to prevent mold growth.

    Adhere the Molding

    • 5

Cut pieces of crown molding into the sizes required for your space.

    • 6

Apply a bead of construction adhesive along the back of the first piece of molding. The adhesive should cover the top and bottom lips where the molding comes into contact with the wall and ceiling.

    • 7

Press the molding in place, sliding it back and forth slightly to distribute the adhesive.

    • 8

Wipe off any adhesive that oozes out with a damp rag.

    • 9

Secure the molding in place with several pieces of duct tape.

    • 10

Repeat this process for all pieces of molding.

    • 11

Allow the adhesive to dry completely. The drying time will be listed on the adhesive container.

    • 12

Remove the duct tape. You way have to wash some of the tape's adhesive off the molding with a surface cleaner.
