How to Choose Sheetrock Thickness for a Ceiling

Sheetrock comes in several different thicknesses, not all of which are suited for use in ceilings. Before selecting a sheetrock thickness, understand the purpose of the room and where it is located in the structure being built. It's purpose will help determine rather or not fireproof sheetrock panels are best suited for the ceiling. The ceiling's location will help determine if there are any sound issues that should be mediated with the sheetrock panels.

Instructions

    • 1

Select sheetrock that is at least 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick for basic ceiling construction in homes, commercial properties and basements. Sheetrock comes in thinner sizes, such as 3/8, but city code often requires either 1/4 to 1/2 thickness for ceiling sheetrock. Check with code enforcement for exact requirements.

    • 2

Choose a thicker sheetrock panel to insulate sound from the floors above the ceiling. The thicker the sheetrock, the more soundproof it is. A 5/8 inch panel offers the best sound control.

    • 3

Upgrade the ceiling sheetrock to 5/8 inch fireproof panels if placing panels in the kitchen. Fire-resistant panels come in this thickness, and typically have the term "fireproof" written on them.
