How to Install Molding Around an Attic Stair's Entrance

Stairs to the attic certainly allow easier access and better use of the space for storing clothing or other items. However, the opening around pull-down attic stairs can be an eyesore. The easiest way to dress up the area around the entrance to your attic is with molding. By installing molding, you will have stairs that look professionally finished. This project is fairly easy and can be finished in just a few hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the perimeter of the stair opening with a measuring tape. Write down the measurements on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Paint or stain the molding as desired. Most homeowners paint the molding to match the surrounding ceiling. You can also paint or stain the molding in a contrasting color to make it stand out.

    • 3

Measure out and then mark the appropriate measurements on the length of molding with a pencil. Indicate on the molding the desired direction of the 45-degree-angle cut. Each corner on the molding should be made up of two opposite 45-degree angles.

    • 4

Place the molding flat on the miter saw. Adjust the molding until it lines up to where it should be cut. Adjust the miter saw to the correct 45-degree angle for the cut. Cut the molding to size.

Hold the molding on the ceiling and nail it in place with a pneumatic nail gun. Fill the nail holes with putty and let it dry. Touch up the paint as needed.
