How to Make a Triple Beam

Residential construction often requires heavy beams to support long spans and vertical loads. Sometimes, a beam offers aesthetic advantages, as well as structural benefits. Creating a large beam out of three heavy boards can meet the requirements of a beautiful supporting structure. The preparation of the boards before building a triple beam creates a beautiful addition to the structure.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark the location of the bolt holes using the tape measure and pencil. There will be five sets of three bolts located every two feet. The bolts will hold the three boards together, with the center bolt slightly off center from the other two. Measure 3 inches from the top and end of one board and make a mark. Repeat for the bottom and side of the same board. Measure the center of the board and make a mark 6 inches from the end; the marks should represent a triangle. Repeat this every 2 feet all the way down the length of the board.

Place the three boards on top of each other so that the board with the bolt marks is on top. Ensure that all the boards are flush with each other, creating a triple beam. Secure the boards together with the large clamps. Use the electric drill and 1/2-inch drill bit and drill holes through all three boards at each mark

Apply the dark wood stain to the boards with the paint brush. The boards should still be clamped together. Repeat if necessary for a darker stain. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

Insert the bolts through the bolt holes until the threaded end sticks out of the third board. Place the washer and nut on the threaded end and hand-tighten. Use one set of pliers to hold the bolt head and the other set of pliers to tighten the nut. The end result makes a beautiful stained triple beam for a multitude of uses.
