How to Hang Room Dividers From the Ceiling

Divide rooms into smaller spaces with curtain room dividers. Light, thin curtains hung from curtain rods allow you to divide rooms without the structural weight of a new wall. Curtains also pull back, allowing you to retract the divider whenever necessary. Affix curtains rods with hooks screwed into ceiling joists to ensure that the divider remains secure and that the hooks will not pull out of the drywall when you open the curtain.

Instructions

  Scan the ceiling with a stud finder. Locate and mark the centers of joists where each end of the curtain rod will sit. Check the distance between the marks with a tape measure. The distance between the holes should measure a few inches shorter than the length of the curtain rod so the hooks will grab the rod inside of the rod's end caps.

  Drill pilot holes through the drywall and into the ceiling joists. Use a drill bit with a slightly smaller diameter than the threads of the ceiling hooks.

  Twist the hooks into the pilot holes by hand. Orient the hooks so they face the same direction.

  Iron the curtain and thread it onto the curtain rod. Set the curtain rod ends into the hooks. Spread out the curtain and shake it gently to allow it to fall smoothly to the floor. Any remaining wrinkles will eventually disappear.
