How to Hide Ducts in a Basement

Finishing a basement means hiding unsightly air ducts from view, but you cannot seal the ducts off because they will need to be accessible for future repairs. A suspended ceiling with drop-in tiles conceals the ducts and provides a way to service the ducts.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Main tee channels
  • Branch tee channels
  • Square ceiling tiles
  • Drill
  • Wood screws
  • L-shaped wall angles
  • Hanger wires
  • L-brackets

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the walls and ceiling joists and determine the number of main tee channels you will need. Use enough main channels so they will be spaced across the ceiling the same distance apart as the ceiling joists. Select square ceiling tiles the same length as the joist distance. Use enough branch tee channels to cover the length of the basement with a distance apart equal to the length of the ceiling tiles.

    • 2

Drill wood screws into the holes in the L-shaped wall angles along the walls 3 inches below the bottom of the lowest-hanging ducts of the basement with the base of the l-shape facing toward the center of the room.

    • 3

Tie one end of a hanger wire through the hole in one side of an l-bracket and loop the other end through one of the holes in the main tee channel so the distance from the base of the l-bracket to the base of the channel is the same distance from the bottom of the joists to the base of the wall angles. Tie the end again through the hole in the l-bracket.

    • 4

Attach more hanger wires tied to l-brackets along the main tee channels at the distance interval as the ceiling joists.

    • 5

Screw the l-bracket bases directly into the ceiling joists with wood screws.

    • 6

Snap the branch tee channels onto the main channel using the tongue and groove attachment on the branch tee channels. Space the branches the same distance apart as the main channels.

    • 7

Turn each ceiling tiles on its side and push it up into the suspended ceiling grid work.
Rotate the tile so it is flat and lower it to the grooves on the channels. Repeat installing the rest of the channels in the ceiling to hide the ducts in the basement and create a new ceiling.
