Texturing a Ceiling With Drywall Compound and Crow's Foot

Installing drywall on a ceiling can be difficult -- since all the work must be done overhead. Because of this overhead application, imperfections may result that may still be visible after taping and finishing. Drywall texture, though, hides these imperfections and gives the ceiling character. Using a crow's foot (or slap brush) and drywall compound is one way to achieve a textured look for your ceiling.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic sheets
  • Painter's tape
  • Mud tray
  • Drywall compound

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the furniture from the room. Lay a painter's cloth on the floor -- and tape plastic sheets along the walls with painter's tape to protect them from splatter.

    • 2

Fill a mud tray with drywall compound and set it aside. This is to create room in the bucket to add water. Add 1 cup of water. Mix the drywall compound with a mixing bit attached to a drill. Continue to add about 1 cup of water at a time until the drywall compound has a pancake-batter consistency.

    • 3

Dip a 3/4-inch nap roller into the drywall compound. Begin in one corner and roll about 6 feet down the ceiling, following the wall. Dip the roller into the drywall compound again. Place the roller on the ceiling next to the first line of drywall compound. Roll down the ceiling about 6 feet. Continue to dip and roll until you have a 6-foot by 6-foot square. Then, dip and roll drywall compound over the square, working in the opposite direction.

    • 4

Roll drywall compound onto the crow's foot brush. Hit the brush against the drywall compound on the ceiling. Work your way along each wall, starting at the corner. Rotate the brush slightly after each hit -- so it doesn't form a pattern on the ceiling.

    • 5

Work your way back and forth over the drywall-compound square. Aim to texture the square as evenly as possible, and do not leave any bare spots.

    • 6

Follow Steps 3 through 5 to texture a second section of the ceiling. Continue in sections until the entire ceiling has been textured.
