Dimensions of Wall Angles

Wall angles are metal supports that attach to a room's walls and support a suspended ceiling around its border. Wall angles lay flat against the walls and protrude at perpendicular angles, providing a narrow ledge that is parallel to the floor. Many different manufacturers produce wall angles, but they typically employ the same standard dimensions.
  1. Length

    • One of the most important dimensions to consider when selecting and purchasing wall angles is the length of each angle and the overall length of the ceiling's perimeter. You can determine the perimeter by measuring the length of each wall in the room and adding the dimensions together. For example, a 10-foot-by-10-foot room will need 40 feet of wall angles. Wall angle manufacturers typically produce angles in lengths such as 10 or 12 feet. However, shorter angles are available for smaller projects.

    Width

    • A wall angle's width refers to the size of the flat surface that sits flush against the wall. This dimension is usually between 1/2 inch and 1 inch, though it is often measured in millimeters for increased precision. The width of a wall angle determines how much space there is for mounting with nails or screws. It also limits the thickness of the ceiling that the angle can accommodate.

    Thickness

    • Wall angles are made of metal, which makes them strong enough to support a suspended ceiling. Since most suspended ceilings are made of lightweight materials such as foam and plastic, the wall angles don't need to be very thick. In many cases wall angles are made of aluminum that is less than 1/2 mm, or .02 inches, thick. This thinness makes wall angles easy to bend and cut during installation.

    Cutting and Installation

    • Regardless of the size of your room, you'll need to cut wall angles to the proper dimensions. Square rooms require fewer cuts than those with multiple alcoves or irregular shapes. A general purpose hacksaw or metal cutting snips can cut wall angles cleanly, allowing you to purchase full-size lengths and customize them to fit the dimensions your room. Overlap wall angle sections during installation for the most support and best protection against moisture from the ceiling.
