Measure the width of the opening where you want to install the gate. Subtract 1 inch from each side of the width to make allowances for the hinges. Keep the gate 3 feet tall for smaller dogs, or 4 to 5 feet tall for larger dogs.
Measure and cut a lattice sheet to size using a handsaw. Also cut two pieces of 1-by-2-inch wood in the desired height of the gate to form the horizontal frames for the gate. Cut two more lengths that measure 1/2 inch shorter than the intended width of the gate so you can nail these along the vertical ends.
Lay the lattice sheet on a level surface. Spread the two 1-by-2-inch boards across the horizontal ends of the sheet. Make sure the ends of the boards are flush with the corners of the lattice and do not extend it or trim excess length if necessary.
Lay the two other 1-by-2-inch wood pieces vertically over the corners of the lattice, with the ends overlapping the horizontal pieces.
Screw 3-inch galvanized screws through the corners using a hand drill to join the wooden frames to the lattice. Make sure the rectangular gate is stable or drill an additional screw through a joint for added security.
Enlist an assistant to hold the gate upright in place while you mark locations for the two hinges. Raise the gate 1 inch off the floor so it opens and closes freely. Position the hinges 1/2 inch from the top and bottom of the gate, on the same piece of wood. Attach one end of each hinge to the marked spot on the gate using screws and the other end to the corresponding wall using 1 inch screws.
Measure from the top hinge to the opposite side of the gate and attach an eye bolt to the wood that faces the wall when complete using screws.
Mark the spot on the door frame that corresponds to the eye bolt on the gate. Mark the spot with a pencil and drill a hook over it. Make sure the hook and eye latch easily.
