Standard Vs. Upgraded Carpet Padding Weight

If you are purchasing new carpet for your home, it is important to purchase the right kind of carpet padding to accompany it. There are numerous types of padding available, each made for a different purpose. Some primary differences in padding are the components it is made from and the weight of the padding. These differences can make a world of difference in the feel of the carpet and its durability.
  1. Types

    • Waffle rubber padding is a very thick type of carpet padding. Its is often installed improperly and can make the carpet feel too soft. Another common type is foam carpet padding. This is one of the oldest types of padding, but it is not a good option for high traffic areas. The last main type is rebond carpet padding, which is the type of padding most often used.

    Weights

    • Carpet padding is available in different weights. The heavier the weight of the padding, the denser the padding is. The weight of the padding is listed in terms of pounds per cubic foot. Areas in a home with high traffic require heavier padding in order to hold up well. Most standard carpet padding comes in either 6-pound or 8-pound weight, although other weights are also sold. If you purchase padding under a 6-pound weight, it is not likely to hold up very well, because it is thin and will sink when you walk on it. An 8-pound will be softer and much more durable.

    Thickness

    • Another aspect you should consider when purchasing padding is its thickness. Generally, good carpet padding will be between 3/8 inch and 7/16 inch thick. This thickness of padding will increase the life of the carpet, feel more comfortable, help reduce noise and insulate your floor.

    Installation

    • In order for carpet padding to do its job, it must be installed properly. Padding is installed by either stapling it to the floor or gluing it. As it is being laid, the installer should also seal the seams with a seam sealer or tape the seams together.
