How to Cut Loop Berber Vs. Frieze Carpet

Berber carpet is looped yarn that unravels easily. Frieze carpet can be looped or non-looped. Knowing how to cut each kind of carpet can save you from making costly errors. When cutting berber, you need to clamp the carpet as you cut it to avoid ruining the carpet. When cutting frieze, you can make the entire cut without clamping, unless it is looped. If the frieze is looped, cut it in the same way you cut berber. Both carpets should have seam adhesive applied after you make the cut, but with non-loop frieze, you can apply the adhesive to the full length of the cut. With berber, you should apply the adhesive as you release each clamp, working your way down the cut.

Instructions

  1. Berber

    • 1

Lay the berber carpet on a flat surface, face up.

    • 2

Position the metal straightedge beside the place you will cut the berber carpet.

    • 3

Place a sharp utility knife up against the straightedge and pull it through the berber carpet. Cut a short section and immediately clamp the carpet to prevent unraveling. Complete the cut, clamping the berber as you go.

    • 4

Remove one clamp and apply seam adhesive. Move to the next clamp, releasing it and applying seam adhesive. Squeeze the seam adhesive out of the bottle and along the raw edge of the carpet. Continue until the entire cut area has been glued. The adhesive will secure the yard in place, stopping the unraveling of the berber carpet.

    Frieze

    • 5

Lay the frieze carpet face up.

    • 6

Examine the frieze to determine if it is loop or non-loop frieze carpeting.

    • 7

Lay the straightedge where you need to make the cut. Position the utility knife beside the straightedge and pull it through the carpet. If the frieze is looped, you need to cut a section and clamp it so the looped yarn does not unravel. Cut and clamp as you move down the carpet. If it is not looped, cut down the full length of the carpet.

Apply seam adhesive to the carpet's cut edges. For looped frieze, remove one clamp and squeeze the seam adhesive out of the bottle and onto the raw edge of the carpet. Repeat this process, removing the clamps and sealing the edge as you go. For non-loop frieze, apply the seam adhesive down the raw edge after you have completed the full cut.
