How to Figure the Linear Feet of Carpet

Carpet is traditionally sold by the square foot, but in some instances, such as when purchasing carpet for a hallway or a staircase, the linear footage may be used when determining price. Linear footage is measured in a single line, as opposed to a square footage measurement, which is taken in two directions. Determining linear footage before heading to a flooring warehouse can save you time and money as incorrect cuts can often lead to more work for an installer.

Instructions

    • 1

Place one end of your measuring tape at the furthest end of your carpet. Linear feet are the same as feet in your tape measure.

    • 2

Anchor the end of the tape measure using a heavy object. In order to ensure an accurate measurement, the tape's metal lip must remain stationary.

    • 3

Pull the tape measure to the other end of the carpet that's being measured. Look at the tape as you pull away. Make sure the line of the tape is straight to ensure a more accurate measurement.

    • 4

Write down the length that is shown on your tape measure. The length on the tape measure is the same as the linear length of the carpet.
