How to Tack Down a Carpet Threshold to Concrete

Carpet padding is usually secured to floors with a combination of tack strips and staples. Because concrete floors are considerably harder than wood floors, staples cannot be used. However, double-sided tape and wider tack strips can be used to secure carpet to a concrete floor. Securing a carpeted threshold to a concrete floor is considerably less complicated than covering an entire concrete floor with carpet.

  • Drill
  • Masonry bit

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 3-row carpet tack strip to a length equal to the width of the threshold opening with metal aviation snips. Note that most tack strips feature only 2 rows of tacks and are considerable narrower in width than 3-row strips. Take care not to inadvertently purchase the wrong tack strips.

    • 2

Position the tack strip over the seam between the edge of the carpet and the threshold.

    • 3

Hold the tack strip steady, and drill holes through the tack strip and into the concrete in 6-inch increments with a masonry bit while wearing eye protection and heavy gloves.

    • 4

Fasten the tack strip to the floor by driving a 1 1/2-inch fluted masonry nail through each drilled hole with a hammer.

    • 5

Apply a length of double-sided tape next to the entire length of the tack strip.

    • 6

Apply a length of double-sided tape to the floor, extending away from the center of the tape applied in step 5, to form a "T" with the tape.

    • 7

Lower the carpet over the tape and onto the tack strip, then gently tap the edge of the carpet into the tack strip with a hammer. Trim away any excess carpet with a utility knife.
