How to Determine Thread Pitch With a Ruler

On a screw, the thread is the raised groves that help the screw go into the material you are screwing it into. The pitch is a measurement of how far apart the threads are. If you have your screw and a ruler, you can quickly calculate the pitch. You also need to count the threads on the screw in order to finish the calculation.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from one thread on the screw to another thread. Make sure you cover at least five threads. For example, assume the screw measures 1 inch.

    • 2

Count the number of threads you measured. The first thread you count is zero, so this thread is not part of what you are counting. In the example, assume there are four threads.

    • 3

Divide the length between threads by the number of threads you counted to calculate thread pitch. In the example, 1 inch divided by four threads equals a thread pitch of 0.25.
